I began to develop an interest in photography four or five years ago when I was traveling to Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia on business. I’d been making long trips to interesting places for several years and had the habit of emailing a journal of my daily experiences to a few friends. They were a way for me to see everything that happened on the trip as adventure on behalf of my friends and family—I was experiencing the world for them, through them, and with their surprise at each new thing. And it meant that when flights were delayed or trucks broke down in the middle of rain forests and the screeching of wild animals began to get closer, my response was always, “Ha! This is going to make a good story.”
